New GM potato offers rich nutrition
New Delhi, Oct 13: Field testing of new genetically modified potato has indicated improvement in the protein content and tuber yield.
New Delhi, Oct 13: Field testing of new genetically
modified potato has indicated improvement in the protein
content and tuber yield.
The National Centre for Plants Genome Research (NCPGR)
and the Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI) compared the
tuber with non-GM controls for food quality profile and
protein content, an official release said here today.
The variety is also being tested for toxicity and allergicity and the data on these characterstics is expected to be available soon, it said.
The NCPGR and CPRI would be reporting the results of the comparative analysis to the review committee on genetic manipulation, it said.
If everything goes well they would need permission of the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) to conduct demonstration-cum-multiplication trials in the fields, the release added.
