New Delhi, Oct 02: The Chinese dragon has hit the Indian furniture industry hard, albeit not with cheap designs but mechanised and state-of-the-art furniture, which is around 30 per cent cheaper than what we get here.
From leather sofas to huge beds in redwood, glass and metal dining tables everything which is needed for an office or home is being offered by the Chinese manufacturers.
"Our USP is the variety, comfort and designs which are unique and not available here. Even the raw material and the combinations being used are unique to china," says Steven Yau, a manufacturer from China.
"It is just a year back that the Chinese makers entered the Indian market and the products are already popular in South India. We are now looking to other states," says Yau.
Yau, who displayed his products at an interiors exhibition here, says it has also been a big hit with Delhiites, especially the dining tables, which are made of glass and metal coated with chrome finishings. Book racks are another hit and there have been lot of enquiries for leather sofas and chairs.
However, the chinese players have no intentions of setting up shops here. "What we are looking at direct importers who could bring in furniture from China on their own."
