A former army major general, who participated in the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak war, says shortage of 10,000 officers in the army is hurting the defence force, depleting its leadership. Army is 25 per cent short of leaders, Major General T M John (Retd.) told an army-media interaction in Bangalore Saturday, noting that the vacancy of 10,000 officers in the army had not been filled, affecting its overall performance.
“Quality people are not joining the army in sufficient numbers,” John regretted, adding, the defence force is short of weapon and equipment. Emphasising the need for the army to build its image, he exhorted the media to become force multiplier and impose self-censorship during conflicts, and not to harp too much on negatives and failures of the armed forces.
John expressed the view that in low-intensity conflict, like the one taking place in the Kashmir valley, it's more important to win the information war than killing militants. It emerged at the interaction that the army needs to open up to a certain extent and develop better understanding with media, which on its part needs to restrain itself on certain occasions, act as force multiplier and be balanced in covering defence matters.
