New Jersey, July 08: New York Rangers Russian centre Roman Lyashenko has
been found dead in his hotel room while vacationing in Turkey.
Officials from the National Hockey League in the United
States have confirmed that the 24 year-old Roman Lyashenko has
died in Turkey where he was
on holiday with his mother and sister.
The NHL centre was on holiday in Turkey with relatives since June 26.
His body is expected to be flown back to his country home on Wednesday (July 9). Lyashenko joined the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1999 after he captained the Russians to the gold medal at the world junior championships earlier that year.
He was a regular player with Dallas in his first two seasons, but saw limited action after being dealt to the Rangers in 2001. Regarded as a good two-way forward, Lyashenko only played two games last season and 15 the year before.
Bozkurt Atilla, manager of the hotel Lyashenko was staying in Antalya, said Lyashenko's body was found by his sister, after opening after opening the door of his hotel room on Sunday (July 6) when they were supposed to check out. "She opened the door and startes looking for him .She finally found him in the bathroom lying on half body, hanged up," Atilla said.
The hotel manager added: "We only found a note which is believed to be in his own handwriting. In that note he was apologizing to someone, but not like he was afraid of AIDS as you read on news. He was just telling his suspicion about some diseases, therefore we sent him to Antalya state hospital instead of Serik town hospital. There all necessary examinations were done but no infectious disease have been found."
The general manager of Russian champions Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, Lyashenko's former club, also told agencies that Lyashenko's body was found by his relatives but added the "cause of his death has not yet been established" The player's body was found with cuts on his wrists but doctor Fevzi Ersoy, from the Faculty of Medicine at Akendiz University, said it was premature to speculate on the cause of the death.
"Lyashenko's body was brought in our hospital on Sunday (July 6) evening after an examination request from prosecution. These examinations are still going on, of course the investigation still goes on, so we cannot make any statement on this," he said.
Lyashenko's death is the latest tragedy to hit Russian ice hockey this year. Lyashenko's former team mate Lokomotiv Yaroslav forward Vladimir Antipov was injured and his wife died in a car crash last month.
In May, Igor Grigorenko, 20, the Detroit Red Wings' first pick in the 2001 NHL entry draft and another of Lyashenko's former team mates, broke his leg in two places and suffered concussion in a car crash in his home town of Togliatti. In January, Lokomotiv coach Alexei Traseukh was shot dead in his apartment in Yaroslavl.
