The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled that Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel, 41, will be tried as an adult in the slaying of a teenage neighbor 25 years ago. The court, on Monday, affirmed a previous ruling that he be tried as an adult, despite the fact that he was 15 at the time of the killing.
If found guilty, Skakel could face up to life imprisonment. A juvenile court would likely have delivered only a symbolic sentence.
“We more or less expected that this court would take this route. We now have to wait for a final judgment,” Skakel's lawyer Mickey Sherman said. Skakel is a nephew of Ethel Kennedy, widow of Robert Kennedy, who like his brother former President John F Kennedy was assassinated. Skakel is accused of beating neighbor Martha Moxley to death with a golf club. Golf clubs similar to the one believed to have been used in the killing were found at his home, though no one was arrested.
