Allahabad, Mar 13: The district administration here has banned the use of generators for industrial and commercial purposes in an attempt to control sound and air pollution even as the Allahabad High Court curbed blaring loudspeakers at night. District Magistrate Devesh Chaturvedi in a press release here yesterday said any person found using generator-set for industrial and commercial purposes without any prior permission of Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) would be punished under the Air Pollution Removal and Control Act 1981. The DM asked the people to ensure that the generators used by them have emissions under the permissible limits declared by the administration. Meanwhile, the Allahabad High Court has also asked for banning the use of loudspeakers from 2200 hrs at night to 0600 hrs in the morning saying that it created noise pollution and must be stopped irrespective of its use for religious festivals or wedding parties. The court had observed that such pollution caused disturbance particularly to persons suffering from heart ailments and students preparing for examinations.

Justice M Katju and Justice Prakash Krishna had given this directive acting on a public interest litigation.
