Kathmandu, Nov 02: Expressing the hope that the "close and special" links between the Nepalese and English armies would be reinforced, UK Army Chief Sir Mike Jackson, has praised the Gurkha race, calling them an "essential part" of his country's armed forces.
Jackson, who arrived here yesterday on a five-day visit at the invitation of Nepalese Chief of Army Staff Pyar Jung Thapa, was yesterday granted audience by Nepal King Gyanendra, according to a press release issued by the British Embassy.
Upon his arrival, Jackson said that his visit would reinforce the close and special links that exist between the armies of the two countries based on almost 200 years of history.
The key to this relationship, he said, was the brigade of the gurkhas which continues to form an essential and integral part of the British Army.
During the visit the British Army Chief will meet Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa and senior army officers. He will also meet the staff of British gurkhas in Nepal and the gurkha welfare scheme staff.
