Turku (Finland), Aug 25: Ederson and Evandro scored three minutes apart in the second half as Brazil topped the United States 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the under-17 World Football Championships. Brazil, unbeaten in four games, will play Colombia in Wednesday's semifinals at Tampere. In the other semifinal, Argentina faces Spain, a 5-2 winner over Portugal in the last quarterfinal.

Leonardo, a central defender with superb offensive qualities, rose high and scored on a brilliant header to give Brazil a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.

Jonathan set up the goal, first faking 14-year-old wonder boy Freddy Adu on the right flank before crossing the ball into the box. Ederson scored his second goal in the tournament, lobbing the ball over American goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi and into the far corner in the 61st.

The Brazilians kept the pressure on and Evandro struck just three minutes later, scoring off a rebound from close range after Marfuggi had made a spectacular save. It was the 100th goal in the tournament.

Evandro now has four goals, tied for first in the scoring race with three others, including Adu.

"The players did what they needed to do today," Brazil coach Paqueta said. "The boys showed their technique today, and I believe we are getting better with every game." Bureau Report
