Bangalore, June 20: Due to the shortage of candidates with required fitness level and a good knowledge of Hindi and English, the southern sector of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is losing 30 to 40 per cent of its allocated strength to other states.
"Last year, we had to surrender nearly 1,500 seats of the allocated 5,000 seats to other states", CRPF southern sector IGP P N Ramakrishnan, told reporters here today.
Though efforts were being made to raise the awareness about requirements for candidates applying to CRPF, he said few candidates with the required physical attributes could come up. "On an average, the recruitment from southern states is dropping by nearly 40 per cent," Ramakrishnan, who earlier inaugurated a new building at the CRPF group centre at Yelahanka on the outskirts of the city, said.
Ramakrishnan said as part of the government initiative, CRPF would be restructured by 2005 and its strength increased to 205 battalions from the present 153 battalions.
"The role of CRPF would be changed for manning subjects of national importance," he said. Ramakrishnan said the CRPF centres offered training for candidates who have got call letters and called on youngsters to be disciplined with regard to physical health, which would enhance their career prospects.
The southern sector includes Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and union territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Pondicherry and Lakshwadeep islands.
