Kolkata, June 07: Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda today ruled out the possibility of forming a third front before the next Lok Sabha elections, but said that all secular parties were bound to unite under one umbrella after the polls. ''The result of the Lok Sabha elections in 2004 will emerge with the same situation of political uncertainty as was in 1996 and will demand the need for reorganising a third front of all secular parties,'' the Janata Dal (Secular) president told reporters here.
Even as the former prime minister complemented the Left parties for their "sincere attempt to form the third front" before the next parliamentary elections, he believed the chances of reunification of all the secular parties were remote before the polls.

Deve Gowda, however, recalled the result of 1996 Lok Sabha polls and said such a situation might reappear. ''I am not saying the third front is not possible. After the next Lok Sabha polls all secular parties are bound to move for reunification to come to power.”
Referring to BJP and Congress, Deve Gowda said that their policy was to maintain equi-distance from both the parties.

''I know the fate of both the congress and BJP,'' he said.

In the prevailing situation, Deve Gowda said that he had no intention to spend much time on third front issue, rather he would like to use his time to strengthen his own party which was likely to contest in 50 seats in the next Lok Sabha polls.
