Bhubaneswar, Aug 02: The Orissa Small Scale Industries Association (OSSIA) has demanded that a tribunal be set up to take up matters concerning Small Scale Industries (SSI) sector in the state. The tribunal should consider violations and deviations made by any department, bank or financial institution from the policies, guidelines and rules laid down by the government for SSI sector, OSSIA president Sanjay Modi told reporters here.
The present system of getting relief through the court of law was not beneficial to the SSI sector as it was impossible to have a verdict within a short period, he said adding these industries often faced sickness and closure because timely relief was not available. It is strongly felt that when such a tribunal exists, most of irregularities shall be reduced automatically, Modi said.
Regretting that the SSI units were facing difficulty as the government, being the major buyer of their products, often acted to their detriment, he said that it was unfortunate that the government had withdrawn sales tax incentives selectively from the SSI sector while extending the same to MNCs. Modi said there were about 40,000 SSI units in Orissa of which about one-fourth had either become sick or had closed down. Bureau Report
