Guwahati, Aug 12: Guwahati, the gateway to the north east, will be declared a separate district on August 15, official sources said here today.
The need to declare the city, headquarters of Kamrup district, a separate district was felt due to its rapid expansion and growth. The focus of the Kamrup district will now be on rural development and the emphasis will be on the implementation of various schemes for development.

Guwahati has 60 Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) wards with about 20 lakh population.
The formal announcement will be made on Independence Day and with this the number of districts in the state will go up to 24.
