Jammu, Mar 08: The PDP-led coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir has decided to defer the bill that would disqualify women who marry outsiders from right to immovable property. The state government will now refer the controversial bill to a select committee of the legislature.

Amidst mounting criticism, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's government was facing a threat of withdrawal of support by four-member ally Panther's Party on the issue.
Earlier, Congress President Sonia Gandhi had also expressed her anguish over the issue and asked the Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to get it referred to a select Committee of the legislature. Describing the "permanent resident (disqualification) bill" as "most treacherous, inhuman and disastrous", chairman of JKNPP Bhim Singh had demanded its withdrawal when it comes for consideration in the state legislative council on March 11.

At an emergency meeting of the party executive last evening, the JKNPP also decided to launch a countrywide agitation against the government on the issue - right from the streets to the Supreme Court.
"This women disqualification bill infringes on the judgement of the Supreme Court in the Keshwanand Bharti case," Singh said.
