He was born on March 3, 1839, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata was an Indian pioneer industrialist who founded the Tata Group, now one of India’s largest and most respected conglomerates.

According to the EdelGive Foundation and Hurun Report 2021, Jamsetji Tata's charitable contributions amount to an astounding Rs 8,29,734 crore, far surpassing those of prominent philanthropists like Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, Ratan Tata, Azim Premji, and Shiv Nadar. His legacy of philanthropy places him among the world’s greatest benefactors.

Jamsetji Tata’s philanthropic efforts were centred on healthcare and education, sectors he believed could transform society for the better.

In 1868, Jamsetji Tata founded the Tata Group, which has grown into India’s largest industrial conglomerate, valued at approximately Rs 24 lakh crore. The group, headquartered in India, includes 30 companies spanning 10 industries. 

He was born into a Zoroastrian Parsi family in Gujarat, Jamsetji Tata had two sons, Dorabji and Ratanji Tata. His family continued his legacy of philanthropy and industrial innovation. 

While Jamsetji Tata's contributions remain unrivalled, other Indian philanthropists like Azim Premji have also made significant donations. Premji, the founder of Wipro, has donated around USD 22 billion (Rs 1,76,000 crore), placing him among the world’s top philanthropists.
