Colombo, May 16: Sri Lanka's main opposition party
today advised the government to help Thailand investigate an
alleged gun-smuggling attempt by three suspected Tamil rebels.
The three men were arrested on Monday by Thai police in a
hotel in southern Ranong province with 13 pistols that they
allegedly planned to smuggle out by boat.
Sarath Amunugama, spokesman for the opposition people's alliance party, told reporters Thailand asked Sri Lanka to provide details of the suspects and urged the government to cooperate.
He accused the rebels of trying to smuggle guns to strengthen a squad blamed for killing military informants and members of rival political groups since agreeing to a ceasefire last year.
"We demand that the government take this threat seriously and collaborate with the Thai government," Amunugama said. bureau Report
