Guwahati, July 16: Train and vehicular traffic in several lower Assam districts, severely affected since yesterday by the 24-hour blockade called by the Sanmiliti Janagoshti Sangram Samiti (SJSS), has resumed plying since early today, official sources said. The SJSS, a group of non-tribal organisations opposed to the creation of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), called off its blockade at 0500 hrs today following which rail and road services resumed.

A north east frontier railway spokesperson said trains which had to be halted yesterday following the squatting of SJSS activists on railway tracks at several places, have begun their onward journey. "Several trains will, however, be rescheduled due to the disruption yesterday and the new timings of the trains scheduled to leave and arrive Guwahati will be announced later in the day," the spokesperson said.
Security in the lower Assam districts of Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta and Nalbari districts continue to be on maximum alert with police making several preventive arrests.

SJSS deputy convenor Brajen Mahanta today claimed that the blockade was a total success though the banned NDFB had tried to sabotage it by killing nine adivasis in Kokrajhar. Bureau Report
