Imphal, Nov 05: Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh today dropped three ministers for trying to form another political platform by engineering defection from among ruling members and toppling his congress-led Secular Progressive Front (SPF) ministry. Governor Shyamal Dutta had accepted his recommendation for sacking the three ministers, the Chief Minister said.
However, there is no threat to the one-year old SPF government following the change. "We still command the support of 37 members in the 60-member house. The attempts by the opposition parties to topple the ministry would not succeed," a senior minister told reporters on condition of anonymity.
The three ministers are Chungkhokai Doungel (Forest), Wungnaoshang Keishing (Excise) and L Radhakishore (Education). Doungel holds a cabinet rank while the other two are ministers of state.
Keishing and Radhakishore Singh had also been expelled from congress for six years with immediate effect on the recommendation of the MPCC disciplinary action committee, Ibobi Singh, also president of Manipur PCC said.
The three, he said, had tried to form progressive congress party by encouraging defection among the ruling members and had not met AICC observer Sambhu Srivastava who was here in spite of repeated reminders.
Assembly sources said Speaker T N Haokip was yet to receive any letter from Congress informing him of the expulsion of the two ministers from the party.
Doungel, Keishing and Radhakishore Singh were not immediately available for comment.
With the expulsion of Keishing and Radhakishore Singh, the strength of secular progressive front has been reduced to 37: Congress 31, CPI 5 and Manipur National Conference (MNC) one, Congress sources said.
