Kenyan Charles Kamathi produced a dramatic late kick to win the men's 10,000 meters at the world championships on Wednesday and deprived Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie of a special place in the history of distance running.
After a tactical race Gebrselassie went into the last lap looking perfectly poised in second place to become the first track athlete to win five world gold medals in one event.
But Kamathi burst away with 150 meters remaining and sprinted off the final bend to win with at least five meters to spare in 27:53.25 seconds.
Ethiopia's Assefa Mezgebu outsprinted Gebrselassie to take silver in 27:53.97 with the twice Olympic champion and four times world champion winning the bronze in 27:54.41.
