Four people, including two soldiers, were killed in a gunfight between lawmen and drug traffickers in Pakistan's mountainous western border region, officials said. An encounter between the Balochistan anti-narcotics force and a group of drug smugglers took place Saturday night...that resulted in the killing of two of our officers, a senior drugs squad official said.
He said two of the smugglers were also killed in the fight in Changhi district, some 400 kilometres northwest of Balochistan's provincial capital Quetta. Changhi covers an area along the Afghan-Pakistan border known as one of the main drug transportation routes between Afghanistan and the Arabian Sea.
Afghanistan's interim government has launched a campaign to eradicate drug production but the country is still seen as a major producer of opium, the raw ingredient of heroin.
