Nearly 15,000 applications have been received from female candidates in response to Bangladesh Army's new recruitment policy opening its officer rank to both the genders. The number of female applicants for officer-ranks is nearly double that of male applicants. A little more than 7000 applications have been received form males. According to a Dhaka daily quoting a ranking official of the army as saying, “We have been encouraged by the large number of applications from females. It is beyond expectations.” Preliminary selection of female cadet officers would begin on September 3. Hasina accuses Opposition of putting pressure on courts. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that those who create obstacles in the trial process of the killers do not want rule of law and an independent Judiciary in the country. She was speaking at a discussion meeting marking the 25th anniversary of martyrdom of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Dhaka on Thursday. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina firmly denied making any remark tantamount to contempt of courts and accused Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP of 'putting pressure' on courts by launching a signature campaign to file a contempt petition for this.president of Supreme Court Bar Association Barrister Mainul Hussain filed the contempt petition with the high court on Wednesday. The prime minister said, “In act what they (BNP) are doing is contemptuous. The court will decide whether I passed contemptuous remarks.” Referring to her remarks during an interview with BBC, the PM and chief of ruling Awami League said, “I said nothing wrong.I will continue to say so if that brings any relief for the people seeking justice.”
