The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday asked the election commission to reply within four weeks to the letter written by dissident Akali MLA Ravi Inder Singh claiming electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the state could be tampered with. A division bench, comprising Justice R L Anand and Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, directed the EC to give its reply within four weeks of receiving the order of the copy.
Ravi Inder Singh had approached the high court seeking directions that EVMs should not be used in the forthcoming Punjab assembly elections, as these could be tampered with. He had pleaded that if at all they were to be used, they should be inter-changed district wise.
It was submitted by the petitioner that there was ample evidence that the EVMs in Punjab could be easily tampered with. He submitted that with the help of an expert he could demonstrate in the court that these machines were not tamper proof and as such were not fit for selecting representatives of the people.
