Kolkata, June 22: Elections to 13 municipalities spread over 10 districts of the state today saw nearly 75 per cent polling with no reports of any untoward incident, state election commissioner Ajoy Sinha said. He said that despite inclement weather, voters were lined up in front of many booths well past the scheduled closing time at 3.00 pm.

"We can say that voting was peaceful. We have not received any complaint of untoward incident, barring some minor allegations," Sinha said.

Around 7.86 lakh voters voted to elect representatives from 837 contestants in Burdwan, Guskara, Dubrajpur, Midnapur, Panihati, Habra, Diamond Harbour, Chakdah, Alipurduar, Balurghat, Mekhliganj, Haldibari and Dalkhola municiaplities. Simultaneous by-elections were also held in one ward each under four other municipalities.

While the Left Front successfully worked out an 'acceptable' seat adjustment mechanism among its allies, Front major CPI(M) and another constituent Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) failed to strike a deal in Balurghat municipality in South Dinajpur district.

RSP, which controlled the municipality, was fighting alone in 21 of the 23 wards. Trinamool Congress (TC) had put up candidates in 200 seats leaving the rest to its ally BJP and Independents.

The Congress fielded nominees in 178 seats.
