Lucknow, Nov 24: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati today refuted allegations that action against Independent MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya was 'politically motivated' and claimed that several cases of his wrong doings had "come to light" after her government proceeded against the controversial legislator. In a statement issued here, Mayawati also denied "caste factor" having influenced action against Singh, saying that he was arrested following a complaint against him by another MLA of the same caste. The Chief Minister also expressed surprise that no action had been taken against Singh and his father, despite the duo having a "long criminal history" and added "inaction against Singh only encouraged his criminal activities and his name became synonymous with terror in the area.”
Mayawati said that as many as 20 cases, including those of kidnapping, murder, dacoity, threatening and assault have been registered against Singh since 1991 while 40 cases of similar nature were registered against his father since 1985.
She also added that several cases of economic offences allegedly committed by Singh and his family came to light when police raided the house of the MLA's manager, Hari Om Srivastava, at Pratapgarh on November 21.
She also alleged that auction of liquor shops in Kund town of Pratapgarh district could not take place for the last five years on account of "pressure" from Singh.
