Lucknow, Mar 01: In a late night swoop, the Special Task Force of the Uttar Pradesh Police busted a major World Cup cricket betting racket and arrested 11 people from Lucknow and Kanpur. On the specific information, the STF teams carried out simultaneous raids in two cities and arrested eight in Kanpur and three in Lucknow respectively and recovered Rs 20 lakh in cash, mobile phones, cash registers, computers and calculators, an STF release issued here said today. Those arrested were carrying out their operations in an organised manner from different places in the two cities, the release said adding that crores of rupees are believed to have changed hands since the beginning of the World Cup. The release said they used to get the betting stakes from the contacts in Mumbai, Delhi and Jaipur. This gang was operating from Mahanagar and Rajaji Puram localities in the state capital and Govind Nagar, Sutarkhana, Lajpatnagar and Transport Nagar in Kanpur, sources said adding cases have been registered against them under the relevant acts.
