Bangalore, July 30: A preliminary enquiry has revealed track defect as "possible reason" for the derailment of the Guntur-Hubli passenger train near Gadag in north Karnataka yesterday, according to South Western Railways.
On experiencing an unusual jerk, the driver of the train immediately applied the brakes "judiciously" and stopped the train carefully, thus minimising further damage, a railway release said here yesterday.

A detailed inquiry by senior officers had been ordered into the derailment in which none was injured, it said.
The driver was being considered for a suitable reward, the release said.
