New Delhi, Oct 03: The fifth Indo-US joint naval exercise begins off the coast of Kochi from Sunday with the arrival of two frontline warships USS Chosin and USS Fitzgerald, one Los Angeles class nuclear submarine USS Pasadena, two p3c maritime patrol aircraft and a product tanker. The Indian Navy is matching it by fielding two guided missile frigates, INS Brahmaputra and INS Ganga, one submarine INS Shalki along with tanker INS Shakti and a variety of integral and shore-based aircraft, according to a defence ministry release.

With the threat of terrorism looming large, the focus in the exercise would be on "VBSS", that is, visit, board, search and seizure.

During this operation, personnel from warships board and search a suspected vessel at sea. There would also be focus on maritime interdiction operations and sea control operations which are meant to exercise the ability to control certain areas of the sea for limited duration for use by friendly forces.
The exercise is significant as it enhances inter-operability and help in understanding each other's operating philosophy. Another aspect is the institution for the first time of the Malabar cup to be contested by teams from the two navies in football, volleyball and golf.
