Barcelona, Aug 26: Spanish giants Barcelona have confirmed that they are interested in signing Arsenal utility player Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
The 28-year-old Dutchman, who can play either at left-back or in midfield, has been unable to hold down a regular starting place at Highbury since his move from Rangers.
The former Feyenoord player suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury in February 2002 - which kept him out for almost a year - and has since been on the fringes of the first team.
"Barcelona vice-president Sandro Rosell is in London negotiating with Arsenal about our interest in the Dutch player van Bronckhorst," said Barcelona spokesman Jordi Badia.
The transfer deadline is on Sunday and Barca coach Frank Rijkaard, who had van Bronckhorst in his squad when he coached Holland at Euro 2000, is determined to strengthen the left side of his team.
