Kohima, Dec 01: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today asserted that the desire to live together under one administrative unit continued to be the cherished dream of the Naga people and the Centre recognised this as an issue. "Though the dream of bringing all Naga tribes together is yet to be fulfilled, the Vajpayee-led NDA government at the Centre recognised this as an issue," he told a large gathering on the occasion of 40th Statehood Day celebration here.
The NDA government at the Centre understood the uniqueness of the Naga political issue, its history and background and started the dialogue process with NSCN(I-M) without any pre-condition, he said, adding the truce with both groups of NSCN brought much needed peace in the trouble-torn state.
"The Nagas desire to live together has been reiterated time and again by Nagaland Legislative Assembly and organisations articulating the voice of all sections of the people. Somewhere over the years the governments of the day had diluted the priorities and (integration) issues, which should have been settled long ago, continued to simmer," he said.
"Though there have been several attempts to resolve the (Naga) issue through cease-fire (in 1964) and dialogues in the past, due to lack of sincerity and commitment no positive results could be brought about," he said.
Nagaland was carved out from Assam and came into being on this day in 1963 through the 16-point agreement signed between Naga peoples convention and the government of India three years ago after a decade-long violence which left a trail of death and destruction in the erstwhile Naga hills district.
