Pondicherry, June 04: A total of 50,000 huts have been identified in the union territory and under a scheme, 7000 huts would be replaced with a pucca structures with proper infrastructure this year, Chief Minister N Rangasamy, said today. Laying the foundation stone of a Rs 35 lakh building for a primary school at Kanuapet, near here, he detailed the schemes evolved by his government.
Stating that none of the schemes had been sanctioned on political consideration, he said even legislators of different political parties had thanked him for sanctioning projects and allocating funds for them without any delay.
A special group insurance scheme had been contemplated for fishermen, through which the family of a fisherman who died, would be given a sum of Rs 50,000. Similarly, old age pension scheme would also be introduced to them, he said.
Rangasamy, said financial assistance would be provided to students from poor families joining professional courses to meet their educational expenses.
Earlier, Theni C Jayakumar, MLA pleaded for starting a women's college in his constituency, to which Rangasamy said such a college would soon be set up at Villianoor.
Education minister K Lakshminarayan, who presided over the function, said Rs 150 crore had been earmarked for education in the current budget.
