Srinagar, Sept 11: Police today took into preventive custody five Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leaders including vice chairman Javed Ahmad Mir who were protesting life sentence awarded to 10 Pak-trained militants by a court in Jammu.

Mir and four others were taken into preventive custody from a procession of JKLF activists at residency road here for violating the section 144 prohibitory orders, official sources said.
Principal sessions judge Subash Chander Gupta, awarding life sentence to 10 militants on Tuesday last, convicted them under the arms act and awarded rigorous imprisonment of seven years to each one of them.
The court also slapped a fine of Rs 20,00o each on the 10 convicted ultras who were arrested by Mendhar police in 1995 following an encounter.
Police also prevented Jammu and Kashmir National Front from conducting a day-long convention at Jawahar Nagar here as they did not have prior permission for the activity, the sources said.
