Faizabad (UP), June 03: Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh today said talks with Congress on forming an anti-BJP alliance at the national level were at a preliminary stage. "It has been agreed in principle that there is need for a strong anti-BJP alliance at the national level, and as far as Samajwadi Party is concerned dialogue with Congress in this regard is at a preliminary stage," Amar Singh told reporters here.
He welcomed Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's statement on the need for formation of an alliance of opposition parties to fight BJP in coming Lok Sabha polls.
Amar Singh said his party had entered into an alliance with Kalyan Singh-led Rashtriya Kranti Party and would contest the next Lok Sabha polls unitedly.
On the political situation in Uttar Pradesh in the wake of withdrawal of support by RLD to Mayawati government, he said the governor should either dismiss the BSP-BJP coalition government or direct Mayawati to seek a trial of strength.
He said reported moves to offer ministerial berths to MLAs to keep the Mayawati government intact were disturbing.
To a question, he said some concrete result might emerge following political understanding among Sonia Gandhi, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, RLD chief Ajit Singh and Kalyan Singh.
He said there would be no difficulty in choosing leader of an alternative government in UP as both Ajit Singh and Kalyan Singh had stated they were not in the race.
"Mulayam Singh Yadav with 142 MLAs, may emerge as the chief ministerial candidate," he said adding the opposition together had the support of 210 MLAs in the 402-member house.
