Pune, July 12: Taking a dig at NCP for shifting its stance on Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin, the national general secretary of BJP Pramod Mahajan today said that the party has cheated the voters.
"This sudden shift in the policy is cheating voters because NCP chief Sharad Pawar had broken away from Congress and formed the party only on the issue of Sonia's foreign origin issue saying that a person of foreign origin should not become prime minister of the country," he told reporters.
Mahajan is here to address BJP-Shiv Sena meet to chalk out electoral strategy for the next year's assembly elections in Maharashtra.
Now nothing has changed. Since the origin is a matter of birth it will never change. What has changed is only Pawar's capacity to fight. Hence, he is more interested to woo Sonia even if it means cheating the voters, he said.
In contrast, BJP and Shiv Sena have always fought the elections together and even now they will do so. It is for the people to decide whether to vote for us or for Cong-NCP combine who have all along been fighting against each other, he added.
Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray and leader of opposition in the assembly Narayan Rane were among those present on the occasion.
