Dhaka, June 11: A tropical storm lashed parts of southern and eastern Bangladesh on Tuesday, flattening huts, uprooting trees and electrical poles, and killing at least five villagers and injuring dozens, news reports said. The storm destroyed about 150 straw and bamboo huts, leaving nearly 1,000 people homeless in several villages in coastal Patuakhali district, the United News of Bangladesh said.

It said one villager died when a tree fell on him in Mombipara village, while another was electrocuted after stepping on a snapped wire in neighboring Dakua village, about 150 kilometers south of the capital, Dhaka.
The storm also sank two fishing boats near the coast, but their crew managed to swim ashore, the news agency reported.
