Jaipur, Sept 30: At least 37 people were arrested after police fired several rounds in air to disperse an irate mob, which indulged in rioting and arson- setting ablaze a police jeep, after a girl was run over by a van at Jaipur-Delhi Highway in Alwar district, official sources said here today. The trouble started when a school girl was killed by a speeding van on the highway at Jaguwa crossing near Behrod yesterday.

The highway was blocked for over five hours as soon after the accident, the locals gathered and indulged in stone pelting, damaging shops and burning a police jeep, forcing the police to resort to lathi charge and firing in air. Additional police force had been rushed to the troubled town where situation was stated to be tense but under control.

So far 37 persons have been arrested in connection with the violence, police said, adding the Maruti van involved in the accident was intercepted near Shahjahanpur and the driver arrested. Bureau Report
