A militant of the Pakistan-based Hizbul Mujahideen was shot dead and another arrested by the Border Security Force in the Kashmir valley since Friday evening, a BSF spokesman said on Saturday.
The BSF laid a trap between Sheikhpura and Barzulla in Baramulla district of north Kashmir on Friday evening and challenged a group of militants.
The militants resorted to heavy firing on the ambush party. In the ensuing encounter, one militant of Hizbul Mujahideen Mohammad Shafi Lone, an active Pak-trained ultra wanted by police, was killed, the spokesman said.
One AK rifle and some rounds were recovered from the slain ultra besides three hand grenades, which were destroyed on the spot.
He said that BSF arrested another Pak-trained militant of the same outfit, Tanveer Ahmed Wani, a self-styled company commander from Barzulla hospital in Srinagar early on Saturday.
Wani, a close confidant of Irshad, district commander of the outfit who was killed recently, was the company commander with a state reward of Rs 50,000, the spokesman said, adding one AK 56 rifle, five magazines, 135 rounds and two hand grenades were recovered from him.
BSF also smashed a militant hideout in village Hathi colony in Arampora area of district Baramulla and recovered some arms and ammunition from there, the spokesman added. Bureau Report
