New Delhi, Jan 20: Justice S N Phukan, a retired judge of the Supreme Court, today took charge as the chairman of the commission of inquiry probing into the allegations of corruption in defence deals. Taking charge after a fortnight of his appointment as chairman to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of his predecessor in controversial circumstances, Justice Phukan met the staff at the office of the commission in the Annexe of prestigious Vigyan Bhawan. Justice Phukan, who hails from Assam and heads the state Human Rights Commission, was appointed by the government on January four but he delayed taking over the responsibility to celebrate 'bihu' a local festival.

With the taking over of Justice Phukan, the commission of inquiry is expected to resume its proceedings soon. Bureau Report
