Krishnagar (WB), July 19: A Trinamool Congress activist was shot dead at Palit-Begia village near Debgram under Kaligunj police station in Nadia district today, police said. A group of miscreants attacked Swapan Mandal at about 9.30 am when he was cycling towards Debgram. They first hit him with sharp weapons and then shot him dead, the sources said.
Swapan Mandal's wife Jharna was the Trinamool Congress candidate for the last Zilla Parishad election.
Agitated at the killing, local people initially refused to allow the police to lift the body. A few policemen were also manhandled by the mob, the sources said.
Tension prevailed in area.
