New Delhi, June 12: The Indian Railways at present have 63,000 route kms with over 14,000 daily trains carrying over 13 million passengers and over 14 million tonnes of freight daily. According to official statistics released today, the national average of railway route kilometres per 1000 square kilometres of area is 19.22 as on March 31, 2002.
The states, which are below national average of route kms per 1000 square kms of area are Andhra Pradesh - 18.89 sq kms of area, Arunachal Pradesh - 0.02, Chhatisgarh - 8.73, Goa - 18.72, Himachal Pradesh - 4.83, Jammu and Kashmir - 0.43, Karnataka - 15.51, Madhya Pradesh - 15.73, Maharashtra - 17.74, Manipur - 0.06, Meghalaya - nil, Mizoram - 0.07 sq kms of area, Nagaland - 0.78, Orissa - 14.90, Rajasthan - 17.22, Sikkim - nil, Tripura 4.25 sq kms of area and Uttaranchal - 6.65, an official release said.
