Guwahati, May 09: The Assam unit of BJP today welcomed the Union cabinet's decision to press for repeal of Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act, terming it as a "historic" move. "The Congress which remained in power for so long supported the act and it was the NDA government who took this bold stand to repeal it in the interest of the people of the state," Assam BJP president Rajen Gohain said here. ''The decision is praiseworthy as the state for long had suffered from large scale immigration from across the border which had threatened the existence of the locals," he said. He alleged that the Congress and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's support for the act only proved their "sympathy" for the foreigners who infiltrated into the state.
Gohain urged the people to remain vigilant and thwart any move to protect the migrants residing in the state. Bureau Report
