Bangalore, June 18: Seven expelled BJP mlas, who have
joined the ruling Congress as associate members, today deposed
before assembly speaker M V Venkatappa and sought three more
months to reply to notices issued to them following a BJP
petition seeking their disqualification under anti-defection
law.
The legislators sought time on the grounds that they are
busy attending to drought-relief works in their constituencies
and that they needed to study similar cases in other states,
official sources said.
The speaker granted them one-and-half-months and adjourned further hearing to August two, they said. Venkatappa had issued show-cause notices to the legislators following a petition filed by leader of opposition in the assembly Jagadish Shettar seeking their disqualification under anti-defection law. The legislators, A Manju, Dr Bharati Shankar, Gantaganahalli Krishnappa, Gundappa Vakil, H C Basavaraj, V Papanna and K H Hanume Gowda were shown the door by the party for their alleged anti-party activities.
After their expulsion, the seven were sitting as a separate group in the assembly and later joined the Congress as associate members. They later wrote to the speaker on their association with Congress but he asked them to appear before him in person and explain their position.
