Moscow, July 29: The combat against international terrorism will remain top priority for Russia's defence and security forces, president Vladimir Putin today said calling for effective interaction of all the national agencies in combating this scourge.
"For all the Russian power departments (defence, security) the combat against international terrorism will remain priority in their work," Putin told his top military brass at a Kremlin ceremony.
"Acts of terrorists are becoming more and more brutal, they are picking peaceful civilians, women and children as their targets. We must contrapose terrorists with (our) aggressive, active tactics and coordinated efforts," Putin said.
He underscored the need to forestall terrorists by disrupting their financial channels and supply lines and destroying their training camps and bases. Putin's anti-terror statement coincided with the beginning of a new phase in Chechnya and wrapping up of counter-terrorism operation in this militancy infested Caucasian province of Russian federation.
At a ceremony in main Russian military base of Khankala near the Chechen capital Grozny today the FSB security service chief Nikolai Patrushev formally handed over the law and order maintenance to interior minister Boris Gryzlov. At the end of transition period, from September 1 the interior ministry will be fully responsible for the law and order in Chechnya, Russia state TV reported.
