New York, Sept 18: The New York Stock Exchange said on Wednesday chairman Richard Grasso resigned as a public outcry over his $140 million deferred compensation and the exchange's governance mounted. "Dick offered to submit his resignation if the board requested, and the board did so and accepted that resignation," Carl McCall said in a statement. "Dick called (the) special meeting of the board this afternoon in light of the recent discussion surrounding the Exchange and his compensation."
McCall chaired the meeting and served as lead director, the NYSE said.
The furore was sparked at the end of August when the NYSE said it had paid Grasso nearly $140 million in accrued savings, benefits and incentives. Bureau Report
