United Nations, Sept 26: Israel called on the United Nations to end what it described as a "campaign of diplomatic incitement" against the Jewish state, denounced Yasser Arafat as "one of the world's icons of terror" and urged its Arab Neighbours to make peace. After Arab attacks against Israel in the past two days and a critical UN General Assembly resolution last week, Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said yesterday it is time for the world body to change its attitude toward his country. Shalom said the 191-member General Assembly, which was key to the founding of the state of Israel, has in the last three decades passed "a litany of resolutions designed to discredit Israel, challenge its interests, and promote the will of its greatest enemies". "No other country has suffered such unjustified attack and consistent discrimination within the UN system," he said. To stress his case, he lifted in his right hand a purple book which he said contained 175 pages of documents from last year's General Assembly session on the Middle East.
"The time has come to end this campaign of diplomatic incitement," he said, urging the UN body to "abandon the automatic adoption of anti-Israeli resolutions". Bureau Report
