New Delhi, July 03: An organisation representing Chakmas of Arunachal Pradesh today sought the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against the July 31 deadline given by All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) to Chakmas and Hajongs to quit the state. "Unless the NHRC intervenes, the Chakmas and Hajongs will have no safety and security of their life and liberty as the state government has extended full support to the AAPSU," president, Committee for Citizenship Rights of the Chakmas of Arunachal Pradesh (CCRCAP), Subimal Bikash Chakma said in a statement here.
He also demanded deployment of central security forces at Diyun (Changlang district), Chowkham Chakma Basti (Lohit district) and Kokila (Papumpare district). Terming the "quit notice" as illegal, Chakma said, "It is unfortunate that instead of showing respect for rule of law by implementing the judgments of the Supreme Court, Delhi High Court and directions of the NHRC and the Election Commission, the state government is promoting lawlessness by supporting illegal measures."
He appealed to the NHRC to file a contempt petition in the Supreme Court for non-implementation of its order of January 9, 1996 that prohibits forcible eviction of Chakmas and Hajongs. Bureau Report
