Thiruvananthapuram, June 19: Kerala government would take steps on a war-footing to check the spread of dengue, rat and viral fevers in several parts of the state which have so
far claimed 51 lives, Chief Minister A K Antony told the state assembly today.
Intervening during health minister P Sankaran's reply to
the notice for an adjournment motion by M V Jayarajan (CPI-M)
and others, Antony said adequate funds would be made available
to local bodies for steps to contain the epidemics.
He said the government shared the concern raised by opposition members in this regard and everything possible would be done to remove the concerns of the people.
Earlier, seeking leave for the adjournment motion, Jayarajan accused the government of taking the situation lightly. More than 1,000 people had been hospitalised with the symptoms of fever, he said.
In his reply, Sankaran said so far 21 persons had died of weils disease (rat fever), while 15 deaths were reported due to dengue fever. Another 14 had died of viral fever and one malaria death was also reported.
Preventive measures to contain epidemics were taken since February this year. District level core groups led by the collectors had been formed and epidemic cells had been opened in all districts and medical college hospitals.
Special teams had been set up for eradication of mosquitoes. Areas surrounding houses having dengue fever cases were being `fogged.' fever clinics had started functioning in places where more cases were reported.
