New Delhi, July 12: Brahmaputra and its tributaries today submerged parts of Guwahati while the situation in Bihar aggravated with rivers overtopping the danger mark along their courses. The swirling waters of the mighty Brahmaputra submerged several areas of the state's capital and was flowing 1.21 metre above the danger level. In the worst-affected Dhemaji district, the situation remained critical with road and rail communication completely disrupted following breach of embankements in several places. Vast areas in Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia in upper Assam were inundated and heavy erosion was reported there.

The army was called out yesterday in some of the affected districts of the state to assist the civil administration in rescue and relief operations. The current floods have so far claimed 17 lives and affected 3,200 villages and more than 3,000 people displaced from their homes.

In Bihar, all major rivers had crossed the danger mark at different places.

Around 10 lakh people have been affected by floods in Madhubani, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur and Khagaria districts.
