Kolkata, Sept 29: In a blow to the Trinamool Congress, the CPI (M) today wrested the Uttarapara assembly seat from it in the by-elections in West Bengal, with its candidate Jyotikrishna Chatterjee defeating TC's Indrajit Ghosh by 16,178 votes in a four-cornered contest.
The by-poll, held on Saturday, was necessitated by the death of Trinamool Congress sitting member Swaraj Mukherjee.
The Trinamool Congress had won the seat in Hooghly district defeating CPI (M) for the first time since 1952 in the last assembly elections in 2001.
Chatterjee (CPI-M) polled 66,826 votes against 50,648 secured by Ghosh of Trinamool Congress. The two other candidates Adhir Mukherjee (Congress) and Jamirul Islam Manu (Janata Dal-S) secured 14,703 and 3,313 votes. Senior leaders of Trinamool Congress, including party chief Mamata Banerjee, besides Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee, veteran Marxist Jyoti Basu and Left Front chairman Biman Bose, campaigned for their candidates.
