London, July 21: South African allrounder Jacques Kallis will miss the first cricket Test against England starting Thursday to be with his sick father.
Kallis returned to South Africa after last week's one-day tri-series loss to England on July 12 to be with his father who has cancer.
"We appreciate that this is an extremely difficult and emotional time for Jacques. I have told him that he must take as much time as he needs to be with his father," South Africa coach Eric Simons said. "He is a vital member of our squad, but ultimately the wellbeing of a player's family comes before any game of cricket. The thoughts of the entire touring party are with Jacques."
It is hoped Kallis will return for the second Test at Lord's starting July 31. Bureau Report
