Malaysia is providing $ 100,000 in immediate aid for victims of the Gujarat earthquake, Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said. Syed Hamid, in a statement carried by Bernama News Agency, said Malaysia has also offered a specially-trained team to assist in rescue operations. "The team would leave for India as soon as approval is received from the Indian Government," he said.
Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad sent condolences to his Indian counterpart Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Syed Hamid sent a message to External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh.
"I would like to convey my profound condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families of the victims for the loss of their beloved ones. We pray and hope that the government and people of India will find strength and courage in this most trying time," The minister said.
