Rock formations depicting lord Ganesha and lord Hanuman have been discovered on a mountain in a rural village, about 90 km from Durban in South Africa. The village, situated near the town of Umzinto, is occupied by African people who are under the leadership of a local tribal chief.
A director of culture in the Kwazulu-Natal education department, Raj Govender, told the news agency that the discovery was made by a local political professor, Phyllis Zungu, while she was conducting research in the area. Professor Zungu made known her discovery when she visited one of our art programmes put on by a noted local artist, Kessie Govender, he said.
She and Govender thereafter went to the site to verify the rock formations. It was here that Kessie Govender also saw the rock formation of lord Hanuman. The area where the formations have been discovered are in a very rural area and shows that early Indians who settled here must have had very good relations with the local African people, he said.
